How to recover from a hack on Instagram

It seems as though your pals have been compelled to publish the dreaded forced post every time you log onto Instagram: "I was hacked, please don't click the link that I reportedly DM'd everyone with for free Cashapp funds." 

It happens fairly frequently: According to NordVPN, about 13 out of every 100 Americans have had their Instagram accounts compromised.

Of course, you can take preemptive steps to ward off an attack. Two-factor authentication, often known as "multi-factor authentication" or "two-step verification," can be enabled. You may enable that function on virtually every social networking platform, at which point a service will receive your phone number and text an access code to your device when you enter your password to log in. You can also perform Instagram's Security Check-Up and make sure you have a strong password.

You might also just resolve not to use Instagram, but as we've repeatedly discovered, education based just on abstinence is ineffective. In order to assist users who lose access to their accounts due to hacking, Instagram just launched a new function.

According to Instagram's blog post revealing the feature, Instagram.com/hacked is a "new, comprehensive place individuals can rely on to report and address account access issues." For any other reason you're locked out of your account, such as if you forgot your password, lost access to two-factor authentication, or if your account has been disabled, go to Instagram.com/hacked and select that you've been hacked. Then Instagram asks you some questions that should enable you to regain access.

According to a blog post by Instagram, "We recognize losing access to your Instagram account can be frustrating, so we want to ensure individuals have many alternatives to get their accounts restored if they lose access." Or you could always see a hack as a divine sign to delete your account entirely and disappear.
