At the CES event last year, Samsung displayed a variety of foldable screens. However, this year, the company is introducing a new feature - the ability to slide out.
The Flex Hybrid OLED mobile screen, which will be unveiled at CES 2023, can both fold from one side and extend on the other, altering both its size and aspect ratio. When closed, the screen measures approximately 4.2 inches wide, but can be unfolded to a 10.5-inch 4:3 display that is suitable for productivity tasks.
The screen can also be extended by sliding out the right side to create a 12.4-inch display with a 16:10 aspect ratio, making it ideal for entertainment or content creation, especially due to the OLED display's high image quality.
At CES 2023, Samsung will unveil a new technology that allows an extra two inches of screen to roll out from the right side of the device when extended. This added thickness on the right side of the display suggests that the screen rolls out from underneath the device. With this combined technology, it may be possible to carry a 12.4-inch, 16:10 OLED tablet in a pocket, making it convenient for entertainment or on-the-go work. It's worth noting that in 2021, Xiaomi unveiled a folding, rollable screen, but has yet to display a working prototype.
In addition to the Flex Hybrid OLED mobile screen, Samsung will also debut two other displays at CES 2023: the Flex Slidable Solo and the Flex Slidable Duet OLED.
The Flex Slidable Solo expands from a 14-inch OLED panel to a wider 17.3-inch display by sliding open from one side, while the Flex Slidable Duet OLED extends from two sides to make the same conversion.
These panels were previously showcased at Intel's Innovation 2022 event in September, but have not yet been publicly displayed.
