Beginning December 16, 2022, human-averse tourists in Phoenix can reserve a totally autonomous Waymo transport from the airport to the city center.
According to the Alphabet-owned firm, the new route is the first totally autonomous airport robotaxi service in the entire world. The company is also expanding its fully automated coverage area in the city.
According to a statement on the company's website;
A completely autonomous all-electric Jaguar I-PACE picked up a Waymo engineer in San Francisco this morning so they could grab their daily coffee and head to work.
Recently, Waymo has sped up the public launch. It was given approval in March to charge for rides in San Francisco with a human safety driver. Prior to launching service to the general public earlier in December, it received authorisation last month to offer fully autonomous cars there. Riders in San Francisco may now reserve a Waymo robotaxi to travel around "a significant chunk of the city, including every area along the 17-mile Crosstown Trail."
The business is currently awaiting authorization before charging for rider-only automobiles in San Francisco. Currently, only certain members of the public and staff of Waymo are served. After GM-owned rival Cruise, Waymo was the second completely autonomous service operating in San Francisco (although it only offers fully automated rides at night).
More Americans can now reserve a driverless car through Waymo, but the company's growth is still small in comparison to China. In major Chinese cities, the public can use Baidu's robotaxi service, but there are restrictions on vehicles without a safety driver.
